Ruby & Sole
Traditional Viking sandals were made primarily from tanned leather — often cowhide or goatskin. The soles were thick and stitched to the uppers using leather thonging or sinew. Some sandals featured side lacing or toggle fastenings for an adjustable fit. These minimalist designs prioritized comfort and mobility, which was essential for a people who walked, farmed, and traveled extensively.
The leather was often treated with natural oils or animal fat to improve water resistance. The simplicity of construction meant sandals could be made or repaired at home, which suited the Viking lifestyle where self-reliance was key.
